Plan a Day at Discovery Cove

Swim with Dolphins

A piece of relaxing tropical paradise is right at the center of busy Orlando, Florida at the one of a kind Discovery Cove. Animal interaction is the heart, and water is the soul of this magical Sea World property.  Discovery Cove feels like an all-inclusive resort with food, beer, and wine all included.

Flamingos on the beach, snorkeling with rays and fish, an aviary to hand-feed birds, animal ambassador interactions, sharks to view, and two warm river areas to swim are just a few of the many things you will love about Discovery Cove! Here are some tips for you to enjoy your time:

Make a plan:

Join the email list today if a trip to Orlando is in your future. The Black Friday sale gives 20-50% off savings. Your travel advisor can help you get those deals as well as package deals.

When it is time to purchase tickets, review all add on options. There is a small charge to add unlimited visits for two weeks at Sea World, Aquatica, and Busch Gardens. You can add 1, 2, or all 3 to maximize the money spent.

There is a dolphin swim offered, and a Sea Venture reef walk with a dive helmet. These are one-of-a-kind experiences, but you can have a fantastic day without them. You can also rent a private cabana with upgraded food and drink choices and a view of the dolphins all day!

Pack your bag:

A waterproof cell phone bag with lanyard and a portable phone charger + wire are must-pack items. You will want to capture memories, and the best ones are in the water. You will need a driver’s license to check-in and a credit card that you can add to your id badge for easy gift shop or photo purchases. Bring sunblock that is animal safe and a pair of inexpensive shades. You may want a change of clothes as well.

Everything else is included, even parking!

Check-in:

Check-in first, then pick up swim gear after breakfast. Choose between a short sleeve, wetsuit, or wetsuit vest. These are required when in the water. The wetsuit is great on chilly days if you plan to spend a lot of time in the cooler saltwater reef. You can change between wetsuit and vest as often as you like. Discovery Cove will provide a life vest, mask, and snorkel. The snorkel is yours to keep at the end of the day.

The main bathroom has towels to use all day and showers stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Blow dryers are on the counters, along with bags for wet items. You can go from Discovery Cove to a night out. Lockers are available outside the bathroom and are included.

Eat well:

Enjoy a buffet-style breakfast upon arrival. The lunch buffet is impressive, with options like churrasco steak, jerk chicken, salmon, burgers, chicken tenders, salads, wraps, and even desserts.

Pro tip:
If there are several items you wish to try, or if you have a picky eater, you can visit the buffet multiple times. Meals can be carried to other areas so you can enjoy lunch where the kids are playing.

There are several food huts where you can grab drinks and snacks throughout the day. You will also get your beer, wine, and cocktails (if you buy the upgraded drink package) here. Make sure to ask for the items that are not displayed on the counters, like hot pretzels or an ice cream cup, to finish the day. Getting cold bottled water to go for everyone in your party is always a good idea.

Enjoy the day:

The favorite spots for beachy seating are at the saltwater Grand Reef, where you swim with fish and rays, and Serenity Bay with a waterfall view, a heated swimming area the freshwater river swim. Decide where you will spend the most time when you choose your spot. There is a shallow freshwater area behind Serenity Bay with green lounge chairs right in the water that is a hidden gem for relaxation.

Be sure to visit the bird aviary, which you can access from the river or dry land, so even non-swimming family members can participate.

Watch for animal ambassadors to be out with trainers throughout the day. The morning flamingo beach walk is a highlight.

Utilize the knowledge of the trainers and staff. They love to share and educate on things like how the stingrays lose their teeth and give tips on finding the teeth on the bottom of the reef, an ultimate souvenir.

Take lots of pictures and remember that sunscreen!
